Doctor of Philosophy with an Emphasis in English Education

A 90-credit hour degree, this program is designed for those individuals who wish to become professors who instruct and train future secondary-education teachers.

Students coming to this degree are granted up to 30 hours credit from their master鈥檚 program, and are then required to take ENGL 6150: Literary Criticism, a course in children鈥檚/adolescent literature, three English education seminars, English 6690: Methods of Teaching College Writing, and EMR 6480: Qualitative Research Methods. Having fulfilled these requirements, students take an additional 12 elective credits, six hours of teaching pedagogy, and round out their doctoral experience with reading and dissertation hours. The program is designed to provide significant flexibility to meet the student鈥檚 educational aims.

Doctoral students from our program have gone on to tenure-track jobs at a variety of institutions, including Purdue University, Shippensburg University, Northern 麻豆传媒应用 University, Oakland University, Georgia State University, the University of Wisconsin鈥擶hitewater, Henderson State University, and Grand Valley State University. Job placement for English education stands in the 90th percentile.
