September 25 | 6:30 p.m. | Chenery Auditorium, 714 S Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo
Lyceum Lecture Series, Lee Honors College

Is chocolate heart-healthy? Do pomegranates help cheat death? News headlines bombard us with such claims. They are reported as science and have dramatic effects on what we eat. Yet, as food expert Marion Nestle explains, these studies are more about marketing than science. Whether it鈥檚 a Coca-Cola-backed study hailing light exercise as a calorie neutralizer,

Unsavory Truth (book): How Food Companies Skew The Science Of What We Eat
or a report from investigators paid by a blueberry trade group concluding that this fruit prevents erectile dysfunction, every corner of the food industry knows how to turn conflicted research into big profit. As Nestle argues, it鈥檚 time to put public health first.

In this talk, Marion Nestle reveals how the food industry manipulates nutrition science and suggests what we can do about it. She is the Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, Emerita, at New York University, which she chaired from 1988-2003 and from which she officially retired in September 2017. She is also a Visiting Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. She earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology and an M.P.H. in public health nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley.
