Interprofessional Healing in Puerto Rico: Diversity, Secondary Traumatic Stress and Self-Care
This is a hybrid travel CE course in San Juan, Puerto Rico, intended for the professional development of social workers, nurses and case managers.
The online and experiential components of the course focus on competencies in ethics; pain and symptom management; self-care and addressing secondary traumatic stress, diversity, equity, and inclusion, implicit bias, and cultural competency. Participants will travel to Puerto Rico to engage in daily self-care activities, and community-based and cultural activities guided by social work instructors and local experts.

Cost: $2,699 per person based on five nights of double occupancy. Single rooms are available for an additional $700. Price includes hotel accommodations, 45 CEs, all cultural activities and tours, ground transportation in city to all activities and breakfast. This Course Contains 45 Total CE Units, and will include 5 CEs in ethics, 2 CEs in pain and symptom management, 2 CEs in implicit bias, and required content in human trafficking:
- 9 CEs in an on-demand self-study format - will open on Feb. 6, 2023 for you to complete at your pace.
- 6 CEs in an online synchronous session on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- 30 CEs on-site in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Feb. 28 through March 5, 2023

The CE training will combine on demand/self-study, fully synchronous, and in person components on site in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish secondary traumatic stress (STS), vicarious trauma, compassion satisfaction (CS), self-compassion, and burnout
- Examine the impact of direct/indirect trauma and shared trauma among community members and social workers in Puerto Rico
- Understand individual, family, and collective factors that promote resilience
- Engage with Puerto Rican social workers and community members to understand the current social, economic, and environmental justice issues impacting the island
- Explore the relationship between power, privilege and colonial oppression and issues impacting vulnerable communities in Puerto Rico
- Explore the African, Spanish and Taino cultural influences on Puerto Rican ethnicity, identity, and history
- Engage in a self-assessment of professional needs and strengths related to STS and self-care, and reflect results, and draft on plan of action
- Understand the history, diversity and political status of Puerto Rico
- Explain the connection between mindfulness and movement practices and pain and symptom management
- Describe the ethical obligation of self-care practice and an understanding of collective care models
10 registered participants (deposit or paid in full) are required by Monday, January 30, for the course to be approved to run. Additional participants can register until February 10, 2023.
