Supporting Underserved Peer Professionals in Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT)

The Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded an Opioid Impacted Family Support four year $2.3 million grant to Western Â鶹´«Ã½Ó¦Óà University under Principal Investigator, Dr. Jennifer Harrison.  

The Supporting Underserved Peer Professionals in Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) program will address the shortage of peer professionals trained to work with Â鶹´«Ã½Ó¦ÓÃders with Opioid Use Disorders.  SUPPORT will provide three main components to up to 24 peers/year: 

  1. Coursework in WMU’s SPADA program
  2. On-demand trainings
  3. Peer professional mentoring  

Over two years of participation, peers throughout the state will be eligible for $17,500 in tuition remittance and stipends. Professional development will be monitored using Goal Scaling Solutions, a secure digital outcome measurement. With capacity and successful completion of all objectives with previously funded HRSA MY-PROUD and I-PEER programs, partnerships with Recovery Institute of Southwest Â鶹´«Ã½Ó¦Óà and individual peer professional content experts, the SUPPORT team is prepared to offer this same expertise in supporting the peer professional workforce in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó¦Óà to enable their work with individuals and families coping with Substance Use Disorders.

SUPPORT Opportunity Open to: 
  • Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or Certified Recovery Coach (CRC) in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó¦ÓÃ
  • Currently working or volunteering with individuals with Opioid Use Disorder/Substance Use Disorder or their families
  • Available to participate in the SUPPORT program for a period of 1 to 2 years
     
SUPPORT Benefits:
Year 1 (up to 24 participants): 
  • $4000 in tuition remittance for WMU SPADA courses;
  • $6,000 stipend 
Year 2 (up to 16 participants): 
  • $7500 stipend in registered apprenticeship in high demand high need areas in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó¦Óà working with individuals or families with OUD/SUD

Dr. Jennifer Harrison
Jennifer Harrison, PhD, LMSW, CAADC is a social worker and chemical addictions counselor.  She is a professor in the School of Social Work at WMU. Jennifer has been in clinical, research and administrative practice for more than 30 years. Her research, teaching and service interests include international social justice, co-occurring mental health, substance abuse and medical needs among adults, peer services and translational research in evidence-based behavioral health.
